The UEFA Conference League begins in the 2021-22 season. Learn everything you need to know about the competition.
What is the UEFA Europa League?
This is the new third level of European competition, after the Champions League and the Europa League.
The UEFA Europa League will now be largely reserved for the national cup winners. The UEFA Conference League is a secondary competition, mainly for those who qualify through their league, although cup winners from lower leagues also participate.
How about a trip to Albania with CF Tirana? Or go to Estonia to fight against FC Flora? Finnish club Kuopion Palloseura (or KuPS) and Ararat Armenia FC also failed to qualify for the Europa League recently. Not to mention the Klaksvikar Itrottarfelag of the Faroe Islands (thank goodness they are called KI!). All of these teams could end up in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League in the future.
How many teams will participate in the UEFA Europa League?
There are 32 teams participating in the group stage and the new competition consists of 141 games in 15 weeks, just like the Europa League.
A total of 176 teams will participate in one stage or the other.
Who will play in the UEFA Europa League?
In plain English, these are the teams that would qualify for the Europa League in the preliminary, first and second qualifying rounds.
As the aim of the competition is to enable smaller countries to play more European football, only five clubs will represent the top European leagues, all of which will qualify for the final qualifying round. The team that finishes lowest in each of these national competitions will be promoted from the Europa League to the Conference League.
Tottenham Hotspur, Granada, Milan, Wolfsburg and Reims would all be playing in the Conference League this season instead of the Europa League if it had started a year earlier.
No team automatically qualifies for the group stage, and only five countries from the top divisions take part in the final qualifying round.
Who can participate in the first edition of this new contest? Based on the current state of affairs (as of April 27) only a selection of the possible participants follows:

Who else is involved?
Premier League
The winner of the Carabao Cup qualifies for the UEFA Europa League by operation of law, as UEFA considers this cup to be the least valuable of the three non-League places in England.
Manchester City won the Carabao Cup, but they do play in the Champions League. And that means the spot goes to the union.
Chelsea and Leicester meet in the FA Cup final. If the winners also finish in the top six of the Premier League, the seventh team will qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
There is a chance Chelsea will win the FA Cup and finish 7th or 8th. In that case the team that finishes sixth qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.
West Ham (5), Liverpool (6), Tottenham (7) and Everton (8) are the most likely contenders at the moment. Will it be a prize or a poisoned envelope?

La Liga
It’s easier now! The spot goes to the team that finished seventh in La Liga, with Barcelona beating Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey.
The top four finishers went off, with a seven-point gap between seventh place and the rest.
This means that one of the following three groups will be eligible: Real Sociedad, Real Betis and Villarreal.
A Series
Juventus (4.) meet in the Coppa Italia final on 19. May to Atalanta (2nd), making the seventh-place team almost certain to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. But who should take the place?
Roma is in 7th place. place, but Sassuolo, who is in 8th place. The gap has closed to 27th place. April three-pointers. Lazio are six points clear of Roma, who are sixth.
Bundesliga
In Germany it’s a bit more complicated because the semi-final of the DFB Cup doesn’t take place until the 30th. 1 April. The month of May will take place. Of the four remaining teams in the competition, only Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig occupy the European places – although they were separated in the draw for the semi-finals.
Bayer Leverkusen are in 6th place and are hoping to participate in the Europa League. Next up are Borussia Monchengladbach and Union Berlin, who are four points behind. It seems likely that one of these three teams will participate in the UEFA Europa League.
League 1
With France abolishing the League Cup as of this season, there is a European format that matches the other major leagues (with the exception of England, of course).
The French Cup is in the semi-finals and, as in Germany, the two semi-finalists (AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain) will qualify for Europe through the competition and were separated in the draw.
This makes the 5. The team has qualified for the UEFA Europa League, but can also slip to sixth place.
The first four places are known. Lens, in fifth place, are one point ahead of Marseille and one more ahead of Stade Rennais. It will be played between these three teams.
When does the UEFA Europa League start?
Youth qualification begins at age 15. June. One of the advantages for teams in the top leagues is that they only have to play one qualifying round (instead of three, as in recent seasons in the Europa League). So your trip will be on August 19, when they will have to play two games instead of six.
Why was the UEFA Europa League founded?
The competition was originally called Europa League 2 as a provisional title and was created to give more chances to teams from smaller countries that do not normally qualify for the group stage of European competitions.
This means that at least 34 countries will be represented in the group stages of the UEFA club competitions (the guaranteed number in the current format is 26).
UEFA president Alexander Ceferin said: There will be more matches for more clubs, more clubs will be represented in the group stage. All clubs have asked to increase their chances of participating more regularly in European competitions.
Does this mean more teams will qualify for Europe?
No, the participant list has simply been adjusted so that teams from smaller countries now play in this competition and fewer clubs qualify for the Europa League.
Where will the UEFA Europa League final be held?
The teams will travel to the national arena in Tirana, Albania on Wednesday, May 24. The capacity of the stadium is only 22,500.
The Europa Conference League starts next season.
️ The #UEFAExCo board has announced that the first final of the 2022 competition will be held at the new National Arena of Albania in Tirana!

Are teams eliminated in the Champions League and Europa League?
Yeah, like this:
Second qualifying round: 20 Champions League qualifying places relegated to the play-offs: The 8 qualifiers from the third qualifying round advance to the knockout stage: 10 qualifiers from the knockout stage advance to the knockout stage: 8 The teams ranked third in the UEFA Champions League group are relegated to the knockout stage.
How many teams will qualify for the group stage?
The best two teams from each of the eight groups will qualify for the knockout phase.
How are the playoffs going?
The group winners automatically qualify for the round of 16. However, there will be a preliminary round (or round of 32, as we now know) in which the runners-up in the groups will play two games against the third-placed teams in the Europa League groups to reach the round of 16. The competition will then follow the traditional knock-out formula.
When are the matches played?
Games are played on Thursdays at 4:30, 6:45 or 9:00 pm. CET.
When will the UEFA Europa League final be played?
The new format of the European final will be as follows:
Wednesday, 24. May: UEFA Europa LeagueThursday, 25. May: UEFA Europa League
Saturday 27. May: UEFA Champions League
Will the winner qualify for the Europa League?
Yes, just as the winners of the Europa League qualify for the Champions League, the winners of the UEFA Conference League automatically qualify for next season’s Europa League.
What do the teams think?
The biggest problem is that all teams in leagues ranked lower than 15th in the UEFA coefficient (based on performance in Europe over the past five years) will now not qualify for the Europa League.
The teams from Cyprus, Switzerland and Greece simply cannot qualify for the Europa League (apart from qualifying for the Champions League).
The competition has caused controversy in leagues whose teams regularly qualify for the Europa League group stages, and who now feel they are being excluded from the second tier of European football.
A more acceptable system might be to raise the threshold for qualification from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League, so that that route is not closed to many teams.
Will the Europa League change?
A simplified qualification procedure means that only two rounds are played. Eight teams qualify for the qualifying round through the league’s average ranking, while the remaining 16 places are taken by Champions League outsiders.
The teams participating in this phase are:
Winner of the third preliminary round of the Czech cup
-Cup playoff winners from Belgium, Ukraine, Netherlands, Turkey, Austria, Denmark and Scotland.
Twelve teams start automatically in the group stage, all from the top six leagues, plus the Conference Europa League titleholders from the 2022-23 season. Ten of them managed to qualify and ten others were eliminated in the Champions League. This should lead to a much stronger Europa League than we see now.
Teams qualifying for the group stage
Cup winners : Spain, England, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal and Russia
Fifth : Spain, England, Germany, Italy
Fourth : France
After the group stage, there is also a preliminary round in the knockout system (again, this is actually a round of 32). The finalists will compete in the Champions League against the teams that placed third for a place in the last 16.
The group winners of the Europa League skip a round compared to the current format and qualify directly for the Round of 16.
