Can listening to Christmas music really boost your mood?

Whatever you’re doing this weekend, whether it’s wrapping presents or washing cups, you might want to put some Christmas melodies in the spotlight.

Come back at Christmas. Enjoy the Arianna Grande EP semifinal, Christmas and relax. Give me everything I want for Christmas.

It might be early yet, but listening to Christmas music might be just what you need right now, especially this year.

Because holiday cheer can really cheer us up.

Carols are generally comforting, said Dr. Becky Spelman, a psychologist at a private therapy clinic, Metro.ru. They remind us of our child’s memories and provide excitement for the coming season.

The lively, festive singing stimulates the brain, which in turn releases endorphins.

Endorphins are the same chemicals released by exercise, cuddles and chocolate.

But beware, the positive effects of Christmas music are not guaranteed, and you should not expect a magical change in the mood.

If you feel particularly sad at Christmas 2020, another lonely Christmas will probably lead you further down the road to a spark of reflection.

If you go through a divorce, you have to avoid songs about Christmas and love.

And if you’ve ever worked in the shop at Christmas, you may have to do without any classical songs, because even a single note of the melody you hear when you repeat it can overwhelm you with excitement rather than a holiday.

I think it really depends on the mood you’re in, Becky.

One day you may feel inspired and excited by a certain song, but when you wake up the next day and feel stressed or cold, you may notice that the same song is actually driving you crazy.

Especially this year thousands of us have lost loved ones, so Christmas 2020 could be a very painful time for more people than usual who don’t want to hear funny carols.

Simply put: Carols don’t have the power to make any resentment disappear, and if you feel uncomfortable, it’s probably better to call and talk to your loved one than to play with the bandit Mariah Carey.

But if you want to cheer yourself up, put this Christmas album out loud and with pride. This is no time to be snobbish about your choice of music – the wetter and more seasonal, the better, and we could all use a little festive applause.
