Real Madrid and French side Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement over the transfer of Sergio Ramos to the French club, the Spanish club said Wednesday. The 32-year-old showed his desire to leave Real Madrid, who he joined in 2016 from Sevilla, by telling the club he wanted to leave.

Sergio Ramos joins Paris Saint-Germain after signing a two-year contract with the club, it was announced on Thursday.
Ramos, 35, left Real Madrid at 30. His contract expired in June after he failed to negotiate an extension, ending his 16-year career at the club.

Ramos wanted a two-year contract. His salary at PSG will be lower than what he earned in Spain and what he would have earned had he stayed at the Bernabeu.

The defender said he never wanted to leave Real Madrid and wanted to agree a one-year contract after long negotiations, but was told the club’s offer had been withdrawn.
It wasn’t a financial problem. They offered me one year, I wanted two, Ramos said at Real’s farewell press conference on 17. June. In recent interviews, I accepted the offer with a pay cut and was told there would be no further offers. There was an expiration date and I didn’t know it. That surprised me.

ESPN reported that Ramos was considering offers from PSG, Manchester City and Bayern and wanted to choose his destination as soon as possible, with family circumstances being a major factor in his decision.
I’m not thinking about a team right now, Ramos said last month. But it is true that my brother [agent Rene Ramos] has received calls from interested clubs since January, when I was on loan and for sale for contractual reasons. We’ll consider a good option for me.
Ramos started his career at Sevilla. In 2005, at the age of 19, he signed for Real Madrid and became one of the most important players in the club’s history.
The midfielder played 671 games for Madrid, scoring 101 goals and captaining the club in 2015 following the departure of Iker Casillas. He won 22 trophies with Madrid, including four Champions League titles – scored the decisive goal in the 93rd. minute in the 2014 final against Atletico Madrid and the first goal in the 2016 final – five La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey titles.
He was also part of the most successful Spanish team in history, winning Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, with La Roja becoming the first team to win three consecutive international tournaments.
Ramos will be looking to get back to his best in the 2021-22 season, after a series of injuries limited his contribution in the 2020-21 season. He played 15 La Liga games last season, his lowest number at Real Madrid, and just two in 2021, which led coach Luis Enrique to not include him in the Spanish squad for Euro 2020.
