The Miami Heat had an incredible 2019/20 NBA season, reaching key milestones, playing for the title against the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers and defying the odds when no one believed in them. Now they’re trying to have a similar season, and the Floridians are willing to give it their all to make another big playoff run, even though the competition is much tougher this year.
The team had a chance to draft two great players during the season and create a superpower that could dominate not only the West, but the entire league, but they decided to keep their young acquisitions and take their chances in the offseason with a couple of great players testing the free agency waters. Bleacher Report’s Farbod Ernashari wrote an article explaining how the Heat missed two big opportunities to draft James Harden and LaMarcus Aldridge.
These two would take the team to the next level, as we saw in Brooklyn with the Nets, especially when Harden was traded there in January. The possibility of the Big Four was very real for Miami, but they made decisions that prevented them from having the best team in the East and maybe even the entire NBA. Today we’re going to see them.
Why did James Harden go to Brooklyn instead of Miami?
As usual in recent years, Miami was considered a very serious contender to acquire James Harden (along with the Boston Celtics), and it looked like they had a real chance to get the Beard, but things went awry because they weren’t willing to give up parts of their roster. They felt Houston was asking too much for Harden and pulled out, leaving the door open for the Nets to take their chances with the Big 3.
According to sources within the organization, the Heat ended up losing the sweepstakes because they felt they didn’t have to give up all their assets. They felt that Houston’s asking price was largely unrealistic.
Jimmy Butler agreed to the transfer, but it never came to fruition. In place of Jimmy Bucks and Bam Adebayo, Harden joins Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on a team that was just ranked first in the East.
Why didn’t LaMarcus Aldridge sign with Miami?
After the trade deadline passed and a very good player arrived in Victor Oladipo, Heath was linked to one of the biggest players on the buyout market, LaMarcus Aldridge. The former Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs player was bought out by the Texans and was looking for a new contract. Teams like the Lakers, Nets and Heat have been linked to the big man. Just when everything looked like Miami would get this contract, Brooklyn popped up again and grabbed a player who didn’t like the Heaths’ current situation and decided to go in a different direction.
It was very unexpected news for the Heat, who couldn’t believe they had missed another key player to elevate their game. Although they’ve gotten better in recent weeks, Miami is still trying to find their stride and return to last year’s form.
A source within the Heat organization said there was a shock at the front office when Aldridge decided to sign with the Nets, as they had been expecting him to sign with the Heat for some time. The no-trade issue for James Harden is closed.
When a team reaches the NBA Finals, they often bring in experienced players for little money. Players who would normally prefer to play for the Heat are joining the Nets.
Is Kyle Lowry the Heat’s next big acquisition?
That’s a very good question, and we’ll have to wait until the summer to find out the fate of Lowry, whose contract with the Toronto Raptors expires in the next few months. However, the team thinks Lowry can find his way to South Beach. Had they kept Oladipo, the Heat would have had a Big Four again with Lowry, Butler, Oladipo and Adebayo.
Lowry has been linked to Miami in recent months, as have Harden and Aldridge. They hope to get a player this time and not let him go to another rival in the East.
