The Washington Wizards have agreed to acquire guard Spencer Dinwiddie in a sign-and-trade deal that will send cash and a protected 2019 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets, a source told ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski. It’s unclear whether the Wizards ended up paying more than the Nets were willing to pay to acquire Dinwiddie, but it’s likely that Washington will get more than Brooklyn did in return.

League sources informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday that the Wizards and Nets have agreed to terms on a sign-and-trade deal that would bring Spencer Dinwiddie to Washington.
Dinwiddie will receive a three-year contract worth nearly $60 million from the Wizards, and the Nets will receive two second-round picks — the more favorable of the Memphis Grizzlies’ and Washington’s second-round picks in 2024, and the Golden State Warriors’ and Wizards’ in 2025 — as well as a $11.5 million trade exception.
According to Wojnarowski, Washington will also trade forward Chandler Hutchison to the San Antonio Spurs, along with a 2022 second-round selection, enabling the Wizards to avoid the luxury tax next season.
Both of these transactions will be included into what has now become a five-team deal that would send Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers got Westbrook; the Wizards got Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Montrezl Harrell from the Lakers; the Indiana Pacers got a second-round choice in the NBA draft that became G League Ignite forward Isaiah Todd and point guard Aaron Holiday; and the Nets got Dinwiddie.

The first-round pick the Lakers originally agreed to send to Washington, the No. 22 pick in last week’s draft, was rerouted to the Pacers for Kentucky forward Isaiah Jackson. The Spurs will get Hutchison and the second-round pick, while the Nets will wind up with the two second-rounders and the trade exception. The entire transaction won’t be made official until Friday, when the league’s annual moratorium on signings and trades is lifted, for salary-cap purposes.
Dinwiddie, 28, is coming off a season in which he appeared in only three games for the Nets after tearing his right ACL partly in December, necessitating season-ending surgery. Dinwiddie, on the other hand, has totally rejuvenated his career since joining the Nets in December 2016, spending the last five seasons with the team and developing into a player that averaged over 20 points and over six assists per game in the 2019-20 season.
But, with the Nets deep in the luxury tax and a backcourt that now includes Kyrie Irving and James Harden, keeping Dinwiddie in Brooklyn was never a realistic option.

Instead, he’ll now replace Westbrook in Washington, where the Wizards will be hoping their active offseason can help convince superstar Bradley Beal to remain in Washington long term. Beal is eligible to sign a contract extension later this year and can become a free agent next summer. The Wizards have completely remade their roster in the span of a week, bringing in five veterans and two rookies in Corey Kispert and Todd while creating future salary flexibility, as well, in an attempt to move the franchise forward after a first-round exit from this year’s playoffs.
After the Wizards’ first-round loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, general manager Tommy Sheppard told reporters, “That’s no longer acceptable.” “We have to improve significantly next season, and we will.”
Last month, Washington recruited former Denver Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr., the son of Washington Bullets great and Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, to replace coach Scott Brooks, whose contract ended following the season.
Hutchison, 25, was the Chicago Bulls’ 22nd overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft. He and big Daniel Gafford were sent to Washington in a three-team transaction just before the NBA’s trade deadline in March, and he averaged 4.3 points in 25 games between the Bulls and Wizards last season.
