West Brom have contacted West Midlands Police over a series of sickening racist messages directed at Callum Robinson following the team’s 5-2 victory over Chelsea.

Robinson came off the bench twice for the Baggies, while Mateus Pereira also scored twice and Mbaye Diagne accounted for the visitors’ second goal at Stamford Bridge.

A number of former and current top players, including Wilfried Zaha, Reece James, Fred, Ryan Sessegnon and Ian Wright, have taken to their social media pages in recent months to denounce the vile racism they have faced.

And Albion striker Robinson has become the latest player to post the shocking news on Instagram following Saturday’s Premier League match.

Robinson shared the sick abuse on his Instagram page.

SMH (head shaking) posted the International Republic of Ireland stories accompanied by a screenshot showing a series of reactions from Instagram user mahamd200010, consisting mainly of monkey emojis.

West Bromwich Albion have contacted West Midlands Police to report racist posts on social media targeting Callum Robinson, the club have revealed on Twitter.

We are appalled by this despicable news and will offer Callum the help and support he needs following this incident.

Pressure is mounting on social media administrators to take stricter measures to prevent people, who often hide behind anonymous profiles, from sending offensive messages.

Last week, former Arsenal and France icon Thierry Henry announced his withdrawal from social media, saying he would not return unless appropriate action was taken against racist abuse.

I’m getting out of social media until those in power can regulate their platforms with the same force and ferocity as they do now when you violate copyrights, Henry told his followers.

The extent of the racism, bullying and psychological torture they inflict on individuals is too toxic to ignore. There has to be some accountability.

It’s too easy to create an account, use it to harass for no reason and remain anonymous.

Until that changes, I’m going to deactivate my accounts on all social platforms. I hope it happens soon.

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden, responded to Henry’s strong statement by highlighting the Government’s determination to tackle social media abuse.

No one should shut down social media for abuse, he said.

Social media companies must do more to address this problem, and we are introducing new laws to hold them accountable. It’s complicated, and we need to get it right, but I am absolutely committed to combating racist abuse online.
