The Suicide Squad Character Posters Charge in Along with New Images

Along with the release of The Suicide Squad trailer, several posters have been released announcing director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and warning us not to get too attached. The posters are in the glorious grindhouse style found on many previous movie posters. Each of these eye-catching pieces is dedicated to a different character, including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Sean Gunn as Laskey, Daniela Melchior as Pied Piper, Michael Rooker as Savant, and John Cena as Peacemaker, just to name a few.

In addition to the Suicide Squad character posters, a new ensemble poster has also been released, giving us a good look at characters like Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg and King Shark, and again hinting at the rich, vibrant and explosive action that is sure to give Gunn an absolute treat for his first DC release.

Some of these characters have never appeared on screen before, including Idris Elba’s character, Robert DuBois aka Bloodsport, a Kryptonite mercenary who wears a technologically advanced suit that only he can use. John Cena’s peacekeeper, meanwhile, was described by the actor as a nerdy Captain America. The posters also show Michael Rooker’s Savant, a vigilante hacker, Sean Gunn’s weasel, who is literally just, well, an anthropomorphic weasel, and even the King Shark.

James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, a reboot of sorts of David Ayers’ 2016 comic book sequel, reunites the best and worst prisoners from the DC universe. The inmates of Belle Reve prison are sent to the South American island of Corto Maltese as members of Task Force X. Their mission is to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi prison and laboratory where political prisoners were held and experimented on.

As for the gang of anti-heroes and villains, several familiar faces, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, reprise their respective roles from the first Suicide Squad.

Alongside them will be many new faces. The rest of the cast includes David Mastmalchian as Polka Dotman, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K, Peter Capaldi as the Thinker, Pete Davidson as the Black Guard, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Mayling Ng as Mongal and Steve Agee as the Shark King, as well as Elba, Cena, Melchior, Rooker and Gunn.

But don’t get too attached to any of them, as Gunn previously revealed that Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment gave him free rein to kill everyone in the movie. Something that, while entertaining for the viewer, does not bode well for the characters.

Gunn also assured the audience that, unlike Ayer’s attempts to craft the characters, he was allowed to tell the Suicide Squad story without interference from the studio. 100% more sharks (and no restrictions). The lack of a restraining order meant I wasn’t constrained by the formulas of most tentpole films OR by budget rankings, Gunn said. YES, sometimes those limitations can help, so I tried to mostly tell a compelling story about unsympathetic characters we can love.

Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on the 6th. August 2021 in the US on the HBO Max streaming platform. John Cena Peacemaker will also get his own series, debuting on HBO Max in January 2022. We know this from the official Suicide Squad Twitter account.
