Superman & Lois Showrunner Teases the Family Dynamic

Unlike most live-action series, the next installment of CW’s Superman and Lois will focus on two of the most famous comic book characters, focusing on the family aspect of their lives. In the series, Lois Lane and Clark Kent not only become parents, but also the parents of two very different teenagers. According to presenter Todd Helbing, it is this challenge and the relationship between the boys that has a huge impact on the dynamics of the entire Kent family.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Helbing explained that it is the differences between the sons of Kent that ultimately form the most important element of the entire family history.

I have two boys who are very different, so that’s part of the story, Helbing said. What do you do as a parent when a child is very different and needs different attention and help? The relationship between the brothers changes the family dynamic. And how do you balance your life as a working parent? Considering that Lois Lane is the world’s most famous journalist, and that she combines the demands of her job with those of Superman, how do you integrate reporting on all these issues?

According to Superman actor Tyler Hoechlin, these challenges are also an exciting part of the story for him, especially since it gives Superman fans a chance to perhaps see how their hero deals with the same issues they face in their own adult lives.

I think it’s a good opportunity for parents to go back and reconnect with this character who was the hero of their childhood and went through the same things they’re going through now, Hoechlin said.

You can read the official synopsis of the first part of the series below.

FIRST SECTION – In SUPERMAN and LOIS, the most famous superhero, the Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin), must get his act together after years of dealing with megalomaniac super-villains, Monsters infesting Metropolis and alien invaders determined to destroy humanity, (reprising Teen Wolf) and the most famous comic book journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, Grimm), face one of their greatest challenges: Dealing with the stress, pressure and complexity of parenthood in today’s society.

To further complicate the already arduous task of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also consider whether their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsässer, Little Lights Everywhere) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, Peanuts) will be able to inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers when they are older. Back in Smallville to take over the Kents’ family business, Clark and Lois again meet Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, Entourage), a local financier who is also Clark’s first love, and her husband, fire chief Kyle Cushing (Eric Valdez, Graceland). Adults aren’t the only ones finding old friendships in Smallville, as Kent’s sons reunite with Lana and Sarah, Kyle’s rebellious daughter (India Navarrette, Wander Darkly).

Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially when Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, Nip/Tuck), is waiting for Superman to defeat a villain or save the day. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois are not bored when they return to the idyllic town of Smallville when a mysterious stranger (Wole Parks, All-American) and the passionate tycoon Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner, Tyrant) intrude on their lives.

Superman and Lois are on Tuesday the 23rd. February at 8pm ET/PT on The CW, then Superman and Lois : Legacy of Hope, at 9:30 p.m., concluding the two-hour prime time program after the 90-minute premiere.
