Djokovic vs Medvedev Preview

Djokovic returned to the Australian Open after Francis Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Milos Raonic, Alexander Zverev and Aslan Karatsev were all expelled.

But the match was not easy for Djokovic, who is struggling with an abdominal injury.

It took a lot out of me, Djokovic said of the Australian Open. I was exhausted, especially after the match against Zverev, but I was very happy to have taken on this big challenge. I knew that if I defeated the beast, everything would get better, better for me. I just had this feeling, and I was right.

The world number one could make his 18th if he beats Medvedev, which would put him close to Roger Federer’s record of 20.

This is one of my two biggest professional goals, Djokovic said in December. To get the record, [and] beat Roger’s record for the longest [time] No. 1 and win as many Slams as possible, Djokovic said. I already said that, so I’m working on it.

I’m in a good position now, in a good position. I hope I can stay healthy and continue to play well.

With so many big games under his belt, is there any pressure?

The pressure is always there, Djokovic said. It’s part of our job. There has been a lot of talk about new generations taking over from the three of us, but that hasn’t really happened yet.

We can talk about it all day if you want, but with all due respect to the other guys, they still have a lot of work to do. I’m not going to stand here and give it to them. I’ll make them work for it.

On the other hand, 25-year-old Medvedev is looking for his first Grand Slam title, but he is already 20 matches behind.

First of all, I like that I don’t have so much pressure, because he has never lost eight times in the time he has been in the final here, Medvedev said. It’s someone who is under pressure to play against Roger [Federer] or Rafa [Nadal] in a Grand Slam [counting].

He has more experience, but he also has more to lose than I do.

Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in the final.

It really wasn’t easy because we saw that the match with Rafa was about even after two sets. Rafa dominated the third set but couldn’t win the match, so I was a bit scared and tense, Medvedev said in an on-court interview, according to the official ATP website. It’s the semi-finals of the Slam… It wasn’t easy, but I’m glad I was able to turn things around, especially in the tense moments on the serve, and I’m really happy to be in the finals.
