This has been a big change for the company, as the original FastPass+ tickets had previously only been valid for one day and were only for the most popular rides. The new tickets will be valid for up to two years and will be available for all of the Disney parks.
Yesterday, Disney announced that it would be replacing its popular “Magic Your Way” theme park ticket system with an entirely new ticketing program. The current system, Magic Your Way, has been in use since 2008. The new system will be called MyMagic+, which will replace the current FastPass+ system.
Disney Parks Permanently Gets Rid of FastPasses, Announces Replacement Program
The quick pass system at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort is being phased out in favor of the Disney Genie, as previously announced by The Walt Disney Company for its theme parks. “Personalized itinerary planning,” “Restaurant wait list, check-in, and reservations,” a “Virtual assistant,” and “Attraction virtual lines” are among the features of the “complimentary and convenient new digital service.” However, many Disney fans have expressed their displeasure with the scheme, since it is just another new method for the park side of the company to extract more money from visitors.
The Disney Genie will be a free app that visitors can use to view current AND projected future wait times, all in an attempt to optimize time spent in the park rather than waiting in lines. The additional fee of Disney Genie+ is where people are pointing to the cash grab of it all. This version of the service, which costs an extra $15 per day at Walt Disney World Resort and $20 per day at Disneyland Resort, will allow guests to use the “Lightning Lane” entrance, which will replace the current free FastPass system and be available for rides such as Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
Guests may utilize the Lightning Lane entry twice each day on “highly desired attractions” such as the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom Park and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park for even more money. “Pricing will vary by date, attraction, and park,” Disney says.
