Montreal Canadiens 3, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (OT) (3-3 tie)

This is the second consecutive game where a Toronto turnover in overtime has led to a Canadiens victory. (Last game it was Alex Galchenyuk, this time it’s Travis Dermott). The Leafs scored two goals late in the third period to force overtime after beating Montreal 13-2 at the end of regulation. But their stars couldn’t cash in on their chances against Carey Price – Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner scored just one goal in the series – and an error ended the game. We had a lot of chances. This is where the game comes down to inches. And we couldn’t do it, Matthews said. The Maple Leafs have now lost seven potentially dangerous series in a row, the second-longest in NHL history. Boston Bruins 5, New York Islanders 2 (Bruins lead 1-0)
With a hat trick from David Pastrnak and 20 saves from Tuukka Rask, the Bruins opened the East Division finals with a home victory over the Islanders. Pasta scored the first two goals for Boston, but it became 2-2 in the third period when Charlie McAvoy scored the game-winner – assisted by David Krejci, who had three goals on the night. There were 17,400 fans in attendance for Boston’s victory. It warms your heart and reminds you why you do this sport. It was great to have her back, Pastrnak said. Full review.

Kotkaniemi scored his seventh goal of the game at 15:15 in overtime. It was a great feeling, especially with the fans in the stands, the 20-year-old said.

The Maple Leafs didn’t let Corey Perry’s goal in the third period throw them off balance, which gave Montreal the lead. Toronto was penalized for a game delay; just 19 seconds later, Mitch Marner sent the puck over the glass, resulting in another game delay, and Tyler Toffoli scored during a 5-on-3 to give the Canadiens a 2-0 lead.
We thought it was a challenge. There’s a precedent where [Tyler] Toffoli was in goal and the goalie tried to get back in his own goal and it didn’t work. We thought we had a precedent, Keefe said. We thought, given the course of the game and the importance of the goal, that it was worth the challenge and we were confident at the time that they would do it. But apparently it became five out of three.
