Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis limped to the locker room in the first half against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, aggravating an Achilles injury he suffered.

Davis drove to the rim and was finished off by Denver’s big man, Nikolaj Jokic, who arrived limping. He took his free throws and walked alone to the locker room, but limped off. Kyle Kuzma started in place of Davis.

Adrian Wojnarowski, an ESPN insider, reported that Davis’ right Achilles tendon has recovered and swelling has appeared. Davis reportedly had an MRI on Monday. The team issued an official statement shortly thereafter.

The Lakers want to keep pace with the Utah Jazz to get the highest scoring title in the NBA. LeBron James has led the Lakers with Davis on injury, but he will need his healthy Los Angeles star for another effort.

“If he’s out for a long period of time, they should be very concerned,” ESPN analyst Paul Pierce said during the halftime show. “It looks like LeBron is going to have to reach into his pocket or into his fountain of youth to carry this team as long as he can.”

Anthony Davis ran out of time with an Achilles tendon injury.

Davis recently missed two games due to what the team described as a hamstring injury on the right side. Davis played 35 minutes Friday against the Grizzlies and scored 35 points. He said after the game, “Achilles” got sick.

“It was great to get into the game,” Mr. Davis told reporters. “But you always strain your hamstring during the game, and at the end it hurt because I was constantly working on it. But it was great at the beginning of the game, it was great throughout the game, but the last game kind of bothered me. I felt like we had the match in our hands and so did the coach, so I was able to sit down for the last two and a half minutes.

Anthony Davis doesn’t want to miss any more time.

Davis said he was not interested in resting after missing a few games, but that he may need to take time off now to recover as the Lakers try to be 100 percent postseason.

“Of course, with rest and all, it can go away,” Mr. Davis said. “But I’m not trying to rest. I’m just trying to keep it as free as possible…. It’s not the Achilles tendon you’re afraid of. It’s – I forgot the name – something that’s pretty painful, so it’s not a real tendon, which is why I feel comfortable playing and letting it go, and why the doctors and management feel comfortable enough to let me go and play.

To put it mildly, Davis is off to a slow start to the season. His points (22.9), rebounds (8.6) and blocks (1.9) per game are all down from his first-team All-NBA campaign a year ago.
