Boxing needs Spence-Crawford in 2021, and the fighters need it too

Errol Spence Jr. is back. He was aggressive and effective in his unanimous decision to defeat Danny Garcia on Saturday, erasing all remaining questions about how he would respond to his first fight after the car accident in October 2019.

I smiled because it was a long, long way to go, Spence said at a post-fight press conference. Much has been sacrificed and bent and scraped, concentrated, trials and tribulations to get to this point, until tonight. I got to this point, and it paid off.

His performance was excellent – both because of the way he looked and felt after the fight and because it paved the way for the only real question for Spence: Who are you going to fight now, and why Terence Crawford? We’ve waited too long for Spence Crawford as a boxing community, and since both fighters have shown that they’re in great shape now, it’s time to fight.

Enough with massive welders like Garcia or Kell Brooke. Boxing needs Superboy – and Spence Crawford would be one of the greatest fights in years, and only Wilder Fury 2 joined him in the conversation. Two fighters claiming the title of king of an intermediate division, each of them ranked in the top five of the ESPN rankings in terms of pounds per pound.

But Spence said after the fight that he wasn’t worried about Crawford and realised he’d just see what the future had in store for him.

I don’t think about it, Spence. I think I will see my children tomorrow, relax at the ranch and finally get on a horse in 10 to 12 weeks.

It always seemed that Crawford and Top Rank had a more urgent fight than Spence and the early boxing champions. It may be business, but in order to fight this battle, both parties must make it a priority.

Crawford attended Saturday’s fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and left Las Vegas, where he recently dropped by to support Shakur Stevenson’s upcoming fight, with the clear goal of putting his face on the radar for the future fight with Spence. It does not seem that his opponent has shown much interest in blowing up this future battle.

I’m sorry to hear that. It takes away all optimism from the idea that Spence Crawford is on the horizon.

We also need to put pressure on Spence to call for this fight, maybe more than on Crawford. But it still seems that the responsibility for understanding this struggle rests too heavily on Spence’s shoulders.

When Spence hits solid but not elite PBC fighters, he doesn’t move the needle. If Spence really wants to be the best welterweight, he has to beat Crawford.

Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, said Spence and Manny Pacquiao were his only options for Crawford’s next fight. Pacquiao is indeed the holder of another world title in the division, but this fight would be a godsend for Crawford or Spence if they could come. But fighting together is the only fight that really matters in the eyes of the boxing world.

If we can’t get Spence Crawford, it’s a boxing charge and both fighters. What’s boxing if you can’t fight the best?

Spence won’t be the undisputed top welterweight or have the argument of being the world’s number one fighter per kilo until he fights Crawford. Crawford needs Spence as an enemy of the tent to strengthen his legacy. They need each other. That’s it. That’s it.
