Barcelona contract talks with Lionel Messi ‘very positive’

The three-time world player of the year almost completed his move to the Camp Nou at the end of the 2015-16 season, and the deal looked like being done by the end of this summer. However, the La Liga giants were unable to agree terms with the Argentine’s representatives, and the player has now made it clear he will not sign a new contract if his existing deal expires at the end of the current campaign.

Barcelona have confirmed that they have begun talks with their star player/probable future captain Lionel Messi over a new contract, and the club is hopeful that an agreement can be reached before the end of the year.

Lionel Messi is reportedly in advanced talks with Barcelona to extend his contract for another year. The Argentinian superstar’s current deal expires in the summer of 2018, but he is keen to stay with Barça in some capacity. He reportedly wants to continue working alongside his current Barça manager, Ernesto Valverde. This has led to reports that the club are willing to offer Messi a new deal, but only if he quits the Spanish national team on good terms.. Club president Joan Laporta has met with the player’s father and business manager, sources told ESPN.

ESPN have confirmed a report from Catalan broadcaster TV3 that Messi has received a first unofficial offer from Barca, which Laporta handed to Jorge Messi during their meeting. The offer included specific financial amounts the Catalan club are willing to pay the Argentine to keep him at Camp Nou beyond this summer.

The meeting was very positive, a source told ESPN, but Messi, whose contract expires on June 30, wants to learn more about the club’s sporting plans before making a decision.

ESPN reported last month that Barca president Laporta was considering offering Messi a two-year contract with the possibility of a one-year extension to compensate for the salary cut the Barca captain would have to take.

If Messi accepts, he has the option to continue his career at Barcelona after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar or with the MLS.

Last December, Messi admitted that he hoped to enjoy and experience life in the United States – an idea that has stuck with him to this day.

According to TV3, Laporta’s final offer will be a five-year contract, but it also gives the Argentine the option to finish his career in the United States and then return to Barcelona and become an ambassador for the club.

Sid Lowe believes that the arrival of aging Sergio Aguero at Barcelona is not exactly preparation for the future.

Sources close to the negotiations told ESPN that Messi’s first option has always been to stay at Barcelona and that he is aware that this would mean a significant reduction in his salary, which currently stands at 70 million euros net per season.

However, the source insists that Messi will prefer a sporting project to a financial offer, and that Laporta is considering various financial options to create a competitive team.

Barca have already secured the signature of Eric Garcia as a free agent and hope to confirm the arrival of Sergio Aguero and Gini Wijnaldum in the coming days. Aguero’s contract at Manchester City expires in June and he already has a verbal agreement to join Barca for the next two seasons. Wijnaldum is expected to sign a three-year contract at Barca after the midfielder’s contract at Liverpool expires next month.

Barca are also working to strengthen their squad and are looking for a coach, although the club are not ruling out Ronald Koeman staying on for another season as there is no consensus within the club on a possible replacement.

ESPN reported earlier this week that Roberto Martinez is one of the candidates being considered by Barcelona. Laporta will hold a press conference on Friday to discuss the club’s current situation.

Messi rejoined the Argentine squad on Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming World Cup and qualifying for the Copa America.

Messi’s father will continue negotiations with Barca in the coming weeks.
