Redick met his new teammates at practice in New York on Thursday, a day before the Mavericks take on the Knicks on their five-game road trip. Redick has reportedly joined the team for good this season, but has yet to start training. There is no timetable for his Dallas debut.
I understand things are moving in a very good direction, coach Rick Carlisle said. Of course we hope he’ll be back to 100% as soon as possible.
The Mavericks, who led 17-8 after six games of losses, have now lost five games in a row. .500 is seventh in the Western Conference with 25 games to go. Dallas is 3½ games out of the top six that the club needs to avoid the playoff round.
Redick made the playoffs in each of his first 13 seasons in the league before the Pelicans failed to qualify for Florida’s NBA reboot last year. The 36-year-old has played in 110 games in the post-season.
Carlisle said he’s a guy whose shots can change the game. We think he can help us on the field. We think it can help us in our daily culture. He is a conscientious worker and a tireless trainer.
Redick is shooting 36% from 3-point range, which would be the lowest of his career if he were no longer playing in the regular season. The most pressing question, however, is how much better his chances will be if he plays with Dallas’ young sensation Luka Doncic, whose formidable offensive skills match his passing abilities.
Luca, like everyone else in the league, knows how to create his own shot and create for others, said Redick, who averaged 8.7 points in 31 games with the Pelicans, about four points below his career average.
The day before his first virtual meeting with Dallas reporters since the deal, Redick said on his podcast that he was uncomfortable with the deal, as he asked to be traded to the East Coast or left out of any deal so he could determine his destination via a buyout.
Last week, Redick unplugged his phone, assuming it would stay on, only to discover later that it had been treated.
I’ve said it several times on the podcast, it’s a great situation, said Redick, who has yet to win a title and has only reached the NBA Finals once, in 2009, when Orlando was swept by the Los Angeles Lakers. I hope I can really help the team in some areas and contribute to a win and hopefully a long playoff run.
With Redick’s experience in the postseason, Carlisle doesn’t hesitate to bring in the club’s best 3-point shooter, likely in late April and early May as the playoffs approach.
From what I’ve seen over the years, every time he came back, he went back to work pretty quickly, Carlisle said. At this point in his career, a two- or three-week rest might be in order. We will try to find a solution soon.
