The NBA Draft is in the books, and the Sacramento Kings will already have their 2021 lineups set. The Kings will likely have a veteran starter in the middle, with a young wing player to follow. After the Kings select a player, they’ll be highly likely to have their 2021 lineups completely set. The draft, of course, changes and develops, and there will be more changes for the Kings after they pick a player. But, for now, it’s safe to assume they’ll have their 2021 lineups set.
The Sacramento Kings are back to being a team with a huge amount of talent. They currently own the 7th overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft, which means that they will be able to select either Deandre Ayton or Luka Doncic. The Kings are a rebuilding team, so they have no choice but to take the best player available. There are a lot of things the Kings could do with the 7th pick, but their best bet is to take the guy that will help them succeed the most. The Sacramento Kings are coming off another dismal season in which they ended with a 31-41 record, putting them at the basement of the Western Conference. There are, however, many reasons to be hopeful about this squad right now. De’Aaron Fox is a rising star who made considerable progress in 2020/21, Buddy Hield is one of the league’s top shooters, and Tyrese Haliburton had a strong rookie season.
The Kings bolstered their lineup in the 2021 NBA Draft, selecting Baylor star Davion Mitchell ninth overall. He’s already shown flashes of brilliance in the NBA Summer League, demonstrating to Sacramento fans why he has the potential to be such a great player at the next level. The Kings selected Utah State seven-footer Neemias Queta in the second round, who projects to be a force in the paint.

Baylor’s Davion Mitchell, PG
Grade: A-
Without a doubt, the Kings were dead on with Mitchell. In his junior season with the Bears, he came to notoriety by guiding them to a National Championship, when they defeated the unbeaten Gonzaga Bulldogs in the championship game. Mitchell is a gifted scorer, but his greatest strength is on defense.
Mitchell is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 205 pounds. He defends with a hard-nosed, in-your-face style, leaving his opponents little space to maneuver. The former Baylor standout has the potential to be this draft’s greatest perimeter defender. When he guards another top scorer, he shuts them down, which is why he’s known as “Off Night.” His defensive toughness will be a big asset for a Kings club that struggled last season on that end of the court. His athleticism and speed are the reasons for his defensive prowess. Mitchell is cold-blooded when it comes to scoring the rock. Despite his lack of stature, the kid has the capacity to grab the cup quickly and finish among the bigs. His attacking skill set is also very adaptable. Mitchell led Baylor with 14.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, and he has the potential to be an above-average facilitator for the Kings.
Mitchell also provides Sacramento with another capable shooter. With the Bears, he made 44 percent of his tries from downtown and can make it rain from any spot on the floor. Despite the Kings’ crowded backcourt, Mitchell’s selection was an excellent one. He has the potential to be one of the greatest players in this class and is really the whole deal.
C Neemias Queta of Utah State University
Grade: C+
Queta was a genuine offensive weapon in college, averaging 14.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in his junior season at Utah State. He accomplished everything from shooting the ball to blocking shots, but the issue is whether or not his skills would transfer to the NBA. The Portuguese native is unlikely to make an immediate impact with the Kings, but his skill set has the potential to blossom into something spectacular.
Queta isn’t a stretch big like Nikola Jokic or Karl-Anthony Towns, but he has a great touch around the basket and is the epitome of a rim-runner. Queta, who is seven feet tall and with a 7’5 wingspan, has the length to block a lot of shots. He’s not the best on the court when it comes to ball handling, committing way too many mistakes. Queta, on the other hand, has good athleticism for his height and has showed some genuine potential thus far in the Summer League.
Richaun Holmes, who started 61 games at center for the Kings last season, is unquestionably the starter, with Chimezie Metu and Damian Jones vying for minutes behind him. Queta will most likely begin his career in the G-League, but his game has promise. This was a low-risk selection for the Kings at 39th overall, and he may turn out to be a future component.
The Sacramento Kings are set to make their historic third straight selection in the first round of the NBA Draft. The Kings have traded their first round picks in each of the last two years to acquire the pick they will use to select a player. This year’s pick is the No. 11 overall selection. They will be selecting the second pick in the second round. Their first round first pick was used to select Harry Giles from Duke University. Giles was selected with the first pick in the second round in 2017. The second rounder was used to select Justin Jackson from Kansas University.
