That’s it: the Lakers have won the series and advance to the second round to face the winner of the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs series. In the second round, the Lakers will face the Houston Rockets, who swept the Spurs in the first round, in a 7-game series. The NBA season 2021-2022 will be here before we know it. The Milwaukee Bucks won their first championship in 50 years after sweeping the country. Cade Cunningham was the first overall pick in the NBA Draft. Free agency, which begins this week, will be the last major stumbling block before next year’s fights.
For a few weeks, we won’t see completed squads, but the new year is approaching. While supporters throughout the nation want to see their club progress, there is only one ideal situation for next season.
The Emergence of a New Super Rivalry
It created another superteam when Russell Westbrook was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook have a combined five MVPs and 34 All-Star appearances between them. The star power is so high that it reminds me of the Brooklyn Nets, another superteam.
Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden are the leading scorers for the Nets. Durant and Harden were teammates in Oklahoma City when they were younger, reaching the NBA Finals in 2012 against LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Then Harden moved to Houston, where Westbrook ultimately joined him for a season before deciding to leave because the atmosphere was poisonous.
The Individual Narratives
There are at least two personal feud tales between these two teams, apart from Westbrook and Harden. After the 2012 season, Westbrook and Durant teamed together for four seasons. In the Conference Finals, the pair guided OKC to a 3-1 victory against the 73-win Golden State Warriors. After then, we all know how the tale ends. Durant departed Oklahoma City for Golden State, where he earned two consecutive Finals MVP awards. In his debut season, Westbrook earned the MVP award without Durant, but he hasn’t been in the NBA Finals since 2012.
Then there’s the matchup between Kyrie Irving and LeBron James. In 2016, the two won a championship in Cleveland, but Irving wants leave after one more year because he doesn’t want to remain in LeBron’s shadow. He was unable to deliver in Boston and fled to Brooklyn. Irving made public remarks about playing with James and his snobbishness there.
Irving ultimately apologized to James and addressed their responsibilities as leaders in 2019, but the two still have an uncomfortable relationship. Irving has said that he wants to win a championship without LeBron James. There will be an additional layer whenever these two squads meet up.
The Ideal Situation
Last year’s narrative about the Bucks winning the championship was fantastic. Giannis Antetokounmpo kept his word, and Chris Paul made it to the NBA Finals for the first time. While we’d love to see Paul win a championship, the Clippers deliver with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, or a surprise team like the Knicks make a run, there’s just one scenario that fits perfectly.
Everyone wants to witness the NBA Finals with the greatest star power. Injuries to stars like Jamal Murray, Anthony Davis, and Kawhi Leonard have plagued the Spurs this season. The two best teams on paper should meet in the NBA Finals in 2022. With the combined star power and personal stories, this battle would be fascinating from start to finish.
The Lakers would have to win in a seven-game series to win the championship. After years of feeling left out by Durant and Harden, Westbrook would win his first championship. LeBron would win his fifth championship and perhaps join the ranks of the legendary Michael Jordan. During their glory years, Irving would have to fully appreciate LeBron’s efforts.
