Real Sociedad 1-6 Barcelona: Lionel Messi scores twice on record-breaking 768th appearance

Messi scored twice and assisted on Sergino Desta’s first Barcelona goal.

Lionel Messi celebrated his 768th win in his career. Played for Barcelona and scored two goals in their 6-1 win over Real Sociedad in La Liga.

The Argentine club’s 33-year-old striker knocked out his former midfielder Javier, as Barca narrowed the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to four points.

Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring, Sergino Dest scored twice and Uzman Dembele also found the net.

Messi has scored 23 league goals so far this season.

Ander Barrenetsea scored a consolation goal for Sociedad at 5-0, but it was too late for Imanol Alguacil’s side to make up any ground at the Anoeta Stadium.

Messi did not disappoint on this historic night, showing the same energy and enthusiasm he has shown throughout his career with the Catalan club.

His first big move was to go to American provider Dest and score his first goal for Barcelona. The walkthrough also asked Messi to help him with eight for the 2020-21 season.

After testing Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro twice in the first half, Messi was finally rewarded with Barca’s fourth goal in the second half.

The icing on the cake for Messi came in the 89th minute. The Argentine’s interplay with left-back Jordi Alba led to his second goal of the evening in the 29th minute.

Although the three points were a welcome birthday present for coach Ronald Koeman, Barça remain behind leaders Atletico Madrid in the title race.

Diego Simeone’s team beat Alaves 1-0 on Sunday, thanks to Luis Suarez’s 500th career goal and a penalty from Jan Oblak.

Historian addsto his data.

The Nu Camp king becomes a free agent this summer when his contract expires, but his statistics for the famous club may never be topped.

Messi’s brace against Sociedad brought his Barça record for goals in all competitions to 663.

When it comes to the top scorer in La Liga, he leads the way with 467 goals. That’s 156 more than Cristiano Ronaldo’s closest rival 311 for Real Madrid.

He also scored at least 20 goals in 13 consecutive seasons in La Liga, which is the league record.

Less than three months into the 2021 season, Messi has already scored 15 goals in 12 games. And with another El Clasico on the horizon after the international break, the playmaker will be looking to add to his total of 26 goals in all competitions against rivals Real Madrid – most in the match.
