Suicide Squad, the next film in the DC Films universe, is just months away from its premiere. In addition to introducing lesser-known villains and anti-heroes from the DC arsenal, the film will feature a number of returning characters, including Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. After Suicide Squad in 2016 and Birds of Prey last year (and a fantasized emancipation of Harley Quinn), there’s a new chapter in the story – and according to Robbie, it’s going to be messy. In a recent interview with Total Film, the actress talked about Harley’s role in the ensemble and how she sees writer-director James Gunn on equal footing.
One of the first things I told James was that I think Harley is the catalyst for the chaos, Robbie tells Total Film in a new post on Suicide Squad. She’s not necessarily the center of the story, and sometimes it’s great when plot points rest on the shoulders of other characters, and she can be the trigger for a whole series of events. I had a feeling he was okay with that, from what I read in the script.
In terms of how she’s changed, it’s always interesting to explore the qualities of the character that attract different directors, Robbie continued. The common denominator is the source material, on which I have always built a character anyway. It then develops in different ways under the guidance of different people.
Robbie has said before that Harley appreciates the influence of different directors, and that that’s part of the fun of acting on screen.
I can tell you it’s going to be great, Robbie said in a previous interview about the film. On the other hand, it’s just interesting to see what another director does with Gotham, these characters and Harley. I’m fascinated by what James Gunn finds interesting about it, compared to what Katie [Yang] finds interesting about it, compared to what David [Iyer] finds interesting about it [Suicide Squad director]. James] is a huge comic book fan, so it’s rooted in the model, which is always important to me.
In Suicide Squad, Welcome to Hell – aka. Bell Reeve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the United States, where the worst super-villains are held and where they will do anything to get out – even join the super-secret, super-dark Task Force X. Today’s make or break mission? Collect a collection of curators including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite Pucho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them and drop them (literally) on the hostile and isolated island of Corto Maltese.
Suicide Squad will see the return of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang from the 2016 film Suicide Squad. Starring David Dastmalchian as Polka Dotman, Steve Agee as Shark King, Daniela Melchior as Rapper 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsucker, John Cena as Peacemaker, Nathan Fillion as TD Kaye, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria and Sean Gunn as Weasel.
Suicide Squad comes out on the 6th. August in theaters and on HBO Max.
