Is the open-world fable game worth the hype?

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is the latest game from CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer that created the popular role-playing game The Witcher. It’s a pretty big deal: this is the first time the developer has been involved in the development of an open world game in such a prominent capacity. And some are calling it one of the best RPGs ever made.

Being a big gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of open-world fable game Horizon Zero Dawn, which launches in February. The game looks incredible on paper, but will it live up to its hype and hype it deserves?

The hype is real—the latest open-world video game, Horizon: Zero Dawn, is set to release on February 28, 2017, and it looks like another “Assassin’s Creed” game. The demon-hunting Aloy fights robotic machines that are driven by a native society that lives in harmony with the world. You play as Aloy as she battles against the machines to save the world of her ancestors .

We followed the development of Biomutant over the course of many years. After so many delays, Biomutant is finally out. Many of us currently feel very excited about the game’s release. Thankfully, Biomutant review scores have also come out, too. So hold your hyped horses, and check out what the critics have to say first before buying the game at launch.

Biomutant review scores on Metacritic

Biomutant review scores on reviews aggregate website Metacritic has been mixed. The game’s Metacritic score for PC and Xbox One both received an aggregate score of 68. The PlayStation 4 version received a slightly lower score – 62.

Biomutant review articles say that the game has very repetitive gameplay. While you gain access to a lot of cool martial arts skills, battles almost always boil down to ranged firefights. The Boss Battles have interesting monsters that you’ll have to overcome. Their designs are reminiscent of Dark Souls and Horizon Zero Dawn – awe-inspiring, unique, daunting. But just like bosses from those games, they move in specific ways that you have to learn and adapt to. However, having access to guns means that as long as you keep your distance from your enemies, you can beat them easy-peasy.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun‘s review praised how the game handled its crafting system. The game’s crafting system is one of the game’s best features. In other games, crafting and loot requires you to give up your favorite weapons for weapons with higher stats. In Biomutant, you can keep on upgrading your old gear with new trash and junk you find along the way.

However, there are just way too many things that get in the way of players enjoying Biomutant to the fullest. Too many small flaws that pile up and make the game annoying to play. On top of this is an open-world that is as colorful as it is interesting, but also empty and featureless as it is wide. “Maybe if there weren’t so many unnecessary things,” says Rock, Paper Shotgun‘s Alice Bell, “then the devs could have spent more time making the annoying bits less annoying.”

Even Conan’s comments during his last Clueless Gamer were correct – this game had too much talking – in a bad and bland way.

Should you play Biomutant?

Most critics agree that Biomutant isn’t a bad game. It’s just not great. WhatCulture‘s Jules Gill concludes his review, saying, “If I were to give this a rating out of 10, I’ll probably give it a 7 out of 10. It’s definitely a good game, but just shy from being a great, great game.” He noted that the game’s history – the way how the action-adventure game clawed and fought its way to release is already enough reason for people to at least give it a try. He also noted that had the game been released in 2017, it would have been a fantastic game ahead of its time. However, Biomutant released in 2021 didn’t offer anything new, and it’s because of this why Biomutant review scores have been middling.

If you enjoy designing a truly unique character, Biomutant can definitely give it to you. Its character creator has a dynamic system that really makes your body type affect the gameplay. This is one of the games that can really claim that your character will be unique in both looks and play style.

While the hype train may be strong, it might be wise if you’ll let Biomutant develop some more. Wait for updates, patches, and sales. However, note that the game’s dated gameplay will only become even more dated as time passes by. There’s a fun game to play here. You just have to be willing to look past its technical issues and little annoyances. If you can get past that, you can enjoy Biomutant‘s colorful, lush, and kung-fu filled world.

Biomutant released on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on May 25, 2021.
