Fox Told George Lucas That His Young Anakin Story Would Ruin Star Wars Franchise

Fox warned George Lucas not to tell the story of young Anakin Skywalker in the prequel to Star Wars. Lucas was informed in the studio that the recording of the young Anakin in the plot would destroy the franchise. Jake Lloyd starred in the 1999 film The Phantom Menace, and the fans weren’t very happy with the whole film when it was released, although Lucas, it seems, never cared. Now that more than 20 years have passed, young Star Wars fans are warming up to the prehistoric trilogy and the stories it tells.

In the second part of the Star Wars Archives (1999-2005) George Lucas talks about how he brought his ideas from the previous period to Fox. You destroy the franchise, you destroy everything! Lucas remembers and adds that he talked to Lucas’ film crew and said he was making a film that no one wanted to see.

George Lucas said he always intended to tell the story of young Anakin Skywalker. For the creator of Star Wars, he had to go back to the origins to show young Anakin before presenting a teenage version of the character. The expectations of the fans were much higher, and they wanted a film that would change their lives and become a second life, Lucas said in 1999. You know, I can’t do this. It’s just a movie. And I can’t say I have to sell it to a completely different audience now. I’m telling a story.

Although much has changed since 1999, Star Wars fandom has remained just as passionate, even though the Internet has helped to strengthen it. I knew that if I had made Anakin 15 instead of 9, it would have been a better sale, Lucas says afterwards. If I made Queen 18 instead of 14, it would be more commercial. But that’s not the story. Lucas thought that the story would generally be stronger if fans saw Junior Anakin leave his mother, and not the other way around.

In 1999, George Lucas called the clone attack a love story and noted that the Sith’s revenge would be very, very dark. He made a prediction about the third part of the trilogy of fondness. People think Star Wars movies are happy movies. I don’t know what they’re going to do with this tragedy. It’ll probably be the least successful of all the Star Wars movies – but I know that. It turned out that Lucas was a bit shocked by what the fans liked about the predecessors in the end. However, it seems to evolve continuously as new generations enter the franchise system.
