Former Seahawks Favorite Signs With AFC Foe: Report

According to The Seattle Times, former Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets on Monday. The report states Branch came to terms with the Jets during his visit with the team in Phoenix. Branch, a two-time Pro Bowler, was released by the Seahawks during final cut-downs last week. The Jets needed help at wide receiver after losing Eddie Royal and Jeremy Kerley (both injured) in free agency. Branch will be reunited with Jets coach Rex Ryan, who coached the Seahawks from 1999 to 2001. Branch, 31, spent the past four seasons with the Seahawks. He was set to make $4.8 million this season.

The NFL offseason is all about business. With some of the league’s biggest stars already signed and some still free, the quarterback carousel has begun. Divisional rival Russell Wilson has signed with the 49ers, who will be a bitter rival of the Seahawks, making it official on Friday. The Seahawks are still in need of a quarterback.

In what seems to be a move to clear up any speculation about his potential intentions for the future, cornerback Brandon Browner has signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. Getty Pete Carroll, the coach of the Seattle Seahawks, is losing one of his favorite players.

Former Seattle Seahawks favorites Shaquem Griffin and Shaquil Griffin will not play on the same team for the first time in their professional careers. Griffin will at least be in the same state as his twin brother after coming to terms with the Dolphins, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The Dolphins are signing ex-Seahawks LB Shaquem Griffin to a 1-year deal, source said,” Rapoport tweeted. “Some LB depth and special teams help. Colleague @TomPelissero had reported he was in for a visit. Now, he’s sticking around.”

Griffin made the Seahawks roster and contributed in each of the past three seasons after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Griffin was released by the Seahawks before to the start of the 2020 season, but he was re-signed to the practice squad a few days later when the linebacker went unclaimed via waivers.

Griffin took part in a Broncos minicamp.

Griffin was connected to another AFC club after participating in the Broncos’ minicamp earlier this spring. Vic Fangio, the head coach of the Denver Broncos, stated in June that the club was taking a “close look” at Griffin.

According to 9 News, Fangio stated, “He’s played enough in this league and he’s a terrific special teams player.” “He’s someone we’re going to look at further.”

Griffin will now return to his native state of Florida to play for the Miami Dolphins, who are on the rise. Griffin has struggled to establish a regular role on the field during his NFL career. His 4.38 second 40-yard sprint performance demonstrates his speed, which the Seahawks used to disturb the quarterback in passing down situations.

Yet, Griffin is undersized compared to most NFL linebackers which has contributed to him being pegged as more of a situational player on defense, as well as a special teams contributor. After Griffin rejoined the Seahawks last season, Pete Carroll praised his play on the field which ultimately led to the linebacker being permanently promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

According to Pro Football Talk, Carroll stated in September, “He was dragging butt all over the field.” “We put him in a unique position, which he handled well. He did a good job rushing the passer and using his other (opportunity), so I expect him to continue to contribute. I was enthralled by his performance.”

Griffin’s Place on the Dolphins’ Final Roster Isn’t Guaranteed

Griffin’s new contract does not guarantee his spot on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster in Week 1. Griffin’s possible fit and the linebacker’s status with the Dolphins were discussed by ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe.

“While the signing does not guarantee Griffin a spot on the Dolphins’ final 2021 roster, it does provide him with the chance to compete for a depth position based on his pass rush skills and special teams knowledge,” Wolfe said. “The Seahawks did not tender Griffin as a restricted free agent this spring, so he became an unrestricted free agent. He has found a home in Miami after visiting many clubs this summer. … Griffin may get more opportunities to attack the quarterback in a variety of ways under coach Brian Flores’ multiple, heavy-blitz system than he did in Seattle if he makes the Dolphins’ roster.”

The Seahawks’ poor, losing ways continued on Sunday (July 30), when the team lost to the Atlanta Falcons, dropping Seattle to 2-4 on the season. That means the Seahawks, already reported to be shopping cornerback Richard Sherman, may be looking to ship Thomas out of Seattle as well..
