Mike Dean: Referee involved in incident-packed game on return

In a month where there were death threats and requests for the club not to play, Mike Dean was no doubt hoping for a quiet day when he returned to work at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Referee Dean played a key role in the highlights of the match. He sent off West Brom’s Semi Ajayi after 30 minutes and refused a clear-cut penalty in the second half.

Ajayi was immediately sent off the field with red after the assistant referee intervened via videotape when the defender was denied a goal when he touched the ball on the halfway line.

But VAR gave Dean the go ahead in the 53rd minute. The Albion captain was unable to consult the field officer in the 57th minute when Kyle Bartley appeared to check Conor Townsend’s header in his own penalty area with an outstretched arm.

This is a sanction.

The key moment of the match was the decision not to penalise Baggies defender Bartley and award a penalty kick to Burnley.

It should be a great deal, says Pat Nevin of Radio 5 Live.

Mike Dean is gone, he’s not interested – but for me it’s pure handball. They have to go and look, don’t they?

Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin was also convinced that the Clarets should have been awarded a 10 after watching the match on One’s Final Score website.

I’ve seen reruns several times, he said. You can see him kick Bartley’s right arm low. It’s a punishment.

Instead, Michael Oliver – the head of VAR – disagreed that Dean had made a clear and obvious mistake, and play continued.

How could VAR miss this? said former Premier League striker Chris Sutton. They are supposed to be a safety net!

I can’t believe we didn’t ask the referee to watch [the penalty whistle] via VAR, added former Arsenal defender Martin Keown. It’s pretty disturbing.

I think they were hoping [this match] would be a good, easy match for Mike Dean.

Instead, there has been much controversy.

David Moyes has been embarrassed by referee Mike Dean after an unjust red card.

was red?

West BromDean has received four red cards in the last three games he has officiated.

The other key moment was Dean’s entrance onto the pitch – and as a result Ajayi was sent off in the 111th minute.

The chief officer waved his hand at first, but was asked to look again.

Everyone will say we should sack him under today’s rules, West Brom boss Sam Allardyce told Sport.

Because who knows if it was a chance to score from 50 yards? If he’s in the penalty area, that’s fine, but he was 50 yards out.

However, most experts agreed that Dean and the VAR were right – and Burnley’s boss, Sean Dyche, didn’t complain.

I thought he [Dean] played really well, Dyche said.

February difficult Dina

Dean has been a magnet for headlines in recent years, but even for him, February was a remarkable month.

Southampton claimed on February 3 that it will not host any more matches after defender Ian Bednarek was shown a red card in the 9-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Bednarek’s resignation was cancelled the next day.

Then, on the 6th. In February, West Ham director David Moyes said he was ashamed of the 52-year-old after he gave Tomas Sucek the red card for elbowing Aleksandar Mitrovic.

This decision was also quickly reversed.

The eighth. In February, the officer notified police after his family received a series of threats, including death threats and abusive messages.

Many referees and players, including Suchek, supported Dean and his family, as the official failed to referee last weekend’s Premier League match at his own request.
