As expected, the Los Angeles Lakers lead the series against the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs. After losing Game 1 against Phoenix, LeBron James and his team adjusted and won Games 2 and 3. The biggest correction was a forced fumble by Anthony Davis that reminded everyone that he could be the best big man in the world.
After a lackluster performance by Anthony Davis in the first game (13 points in 39 minutes), he scored 34 points in the second and third games. With LeBron pulling the strings and Davis dominating, the Lakers prove once again that they are the team to beat. In fact, they are the most talented team in the Western Conference and the favorite to make it to the NBA Finals this year. No one in the conference can beat the Lakers, and if you look east, no one but the Brooklyn Nets has a chance.
Lakers have too many players on both ends of the field
The Lakers suddenly have tremendous size on the court. They have the best forward in the NBA with very talented and important players. LeBron James is a powerhouse at 0, Davis is 6-foot-6 with defensive prowess, Andre Drummond is mobile at 6-foot-1 and Marc Gasol is 6-foot-2. Such greatness wears down opponents, as the series against the Phoenix Suns demonstrated. Outside of Deandre Ayton, the Suns have no answer for the Lakers’ size. If you look around the league, nobody knows.
The Lakers’ size was one of their biggest assets last season, but they replaced Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee with Andre Drummond and Marc Gasol. It’s clear they’ve gotten better on both sides of the ball. Drummond and Davis are great at tackling down the field, and LeBron is unstoppable when he attacks the rim. Gasol is a backup center, but he’s very smart and will always do the right thing for the Lakers.
Even Montrezl Harrell, who was a forgotten star this season, can make significant minutes. Harrell was picked 6th last year. Man of the Year, and he has an average PPG and RPG this season, so he’s another option for LA. Kyle Kuzma hasn’t had success in the playoffs so far, but he’s a basketball player at heart, and he can’t be ignored on offense. Kuzma can light up at any time and will always be a threat in the paint or on the perimeter. The Lakers have the best players in the NBA, and it’s a gamble.
Lakers defenders have strength, courage and shot power
Lakers guards don’t get enough recognition for what they bring to the game, but it’s time they did. Alex Caruso, Kentavius Caldwell-Pope, Wesley Matthews and Dennis Schroder are good role players for the Lakers. They defend relentlessly on every possession, never give up when they have an open opportunity or a path to the basket, and are very unselfish. Each of these defenders is playing the right way and has full confidence in LeBron James and the Lakers’ coaching staff.
When the Bigs dominate inside, the Lakers’ defenders distribute space perfectly. Dennis Schroder had perhaps his best games with the Lakers in games two and three against the Suns, scoring 24 and 20 points respectively. His ability to jump into the ring without hesitation puts pressure on opponents and even creates opportunities for Drummond and Davis to rebound on offense. Caruso, Matthews and Caldwell-Pope are tough defenders who can defend any possession of the ball with no real weaknesses.
LeBron James is the smartest player in the NBA, Anthony Davis is unstoppable
LeBron James seems a little slower, and he doesn’t want to take over the game like we’re used to. After all, he is 36 years old and has been playing in the NBA for 18 years. Instead, let King work his brain. No player in NBA history, perhaps with the exception of Magic Johnson, has as high a basketball IQ as LeBron James, who amazed the Phoenix Suns with his assists. LeBron makes the right play every time, whether he’s passing the ball hard or trapping his shooters.
No player can outsmart LeBron at this point, which means the Lakers will always make the right adjustments. As the Lakers get deeper into the playoffs, we’ll also see a more aggressive LeBron James, which is a big deal for any team in the league. But as good as LeBron is, Anthony Davis’ play will determine how the Lakers finish the season.
Anthony Davis is absolutely unstoppable. No other great player in the NBA can dominate both ends of the court like he does, as his athletic ability and talent are unmatched. While the league focuses on Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid, and for good reason, Anthony Davis is a top 5 player on both ends of the floor. Davis awoke from his slumber by scoring 68 points in two consecutive playoff games. When Davis leads the offense, the Lakers seem unbeatable.
Only the Brooklyn Nets can play against the Lakers
The Brooklyn Nets had success against the Boston Celtics, going 2-0 and enjoying it. The Nets are the most talented team in modern NBA history, surpassing even the Golden State Warriors dynasty with Kevin Durant. Brooklyn has three superstars – Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden – but the rest of the team is also extremely talented.
Joe Harris has been on the rise this season, averaging 14.1 PPG and 47.5 percent three-pointers in the regular season. In the playoffs, Harris scored 25 points in the Nets’ last resounding victory. Besides Harris, the Nets have a few other players. Blake Griffin has suddenly become a dunk machine after not dinking a single time this season with the Detroit Pistons. Griffin may not be a star anymore, but his IQ is huge and he fits like a glove in a three-man game.
Landry Shamet can score from the three-point line, and Nick Claxton is a promising center who gives Brooklyn the size it needs on offense. Bruce Brown has developed into a reliable wing attacker who plays hard every night, and Brooklyn has a great group of players who can be brought into the game at any time. Since the departure of Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni, the Nets have had a very scary offense.
Looking at the game between the Lakers and the Nets, it’s clear that these are teams that need to be beaten. The Lakers have more size than anyone in the NBA, including the Nets, but Brooklyn has three unstoppable offensive players. Four-time top scorer Kevin Durant is showing the world once again that he is special. With the exception of LeBron James and Larry Bird, it’s hard to find the best small attacker in terms of pure talent in NBA history.
Durant is a problem for the Lakers because no one can defend him, not even the mighty LeBron James. Durant can throw anyone and is always explosive offensively. Next to him is James Harden, three-time scoring champion and arguably the best isolation player in NBA history. Harden and Durant are a formidable duo who can create a shot at any time, especially when Kyrie Irving starts dancing.
Irving is the best ball handler in NBA history, and LeBron James knows firsthand what he can do on the court. Durant, Harden and Irving cannot be stopped by any NBA team, including the Lakers. Even though LA has a bunch of big men pressuring Brooklyn, the Big Three can always score. With so much talent that the Nets have shown from the start, the Lakers are facing the only team capable of matching and beating them.
Brooklyn and LA have no competition, but Brooklyn is thefavorite.
The Lakers are not afraid of any team in the Western Conference. Even as a 7th seed, the Lakers are better than any team in the West. The Suns have Chris Paul injured and are very young, which means the Lakers will have to come up with something for Game 7. Utah had a great season, but their two stars are no match for LeBron and Davis. The Clippers… They’re losers who might not even make it to the first round.
For Brooklyn, the rivals are mainly Philadelphia and Milwaukee. The Sixers and Bucks have an easy bye in the first round and are proving that they are title contenders this season. Joel Embiid and Giannis Antitokounmpo are MVP-level players, so they will always be a threat. But Brooklyn also has 2 MVP-caliber players and 3 superstars who can surpass what Embiid or Giannis can do on the court.
In the likely final battle between the Lakers and the Nets, Brooklyn is the favorite. Davis, along with Drummond, can call the shots and dominate, but his offense alone cannot match what Durant, Harden and Irving have to offer. Physically, LeBron is not the player he was a few years ago, which means the big three has an advantage.
James Harden has had a very difficult time this year. He decided to leave Houston to get a great team, and he did. Durant has proven to be at his best in big games, and Kyrie is a 40-point explosion waiting to happen.
