Suns Big Man DeAndre Ayton Sends Message to Lakers

DeAndre Ayton was once a highly touted prospect who was supposed to be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. His talent was undeniable, but his attitude was a concern. Since Ayton is young, the Phoenix Suns decided to take a gamble on him and are now enjoying the benefits of that gamble. The young big man has been terrific early in his pro career, averaging 20.9 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. What’s more, he’s done all of that while shooting 62.9% from the field.

DeAndre Ayton had 18 points and 16 rebounds and Tyson Chandler added 14 as the Phoenix Suns held off the Lakers 123-116 in Los Angeles. Ayton, who was drafted by the Lakers a year ago, but traded to the Suns in the trade deadline deal that sent Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart to the Lakers, added the game-winning shot with less than a minute remaining. The Lakers tried to send a message but it ended up being on the wrong team. Ayton, the #1 pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, sent a message to the Lakers in a big way with a monster night of 18 points and 16 rebounds and hit a game winning shot with just under a minute remaining to give his team the win.

It may only be preseason, but Phoenix Suns rookie Deandre Ayton is already letting his intentions of doing big things in the L come through loud and clear. In a game against the Los Angeles Lakers this past Friday, Ayton had a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. However, it was his post-game comments that stood out. In contrast to last season, when he was booed by NBA fans for his lackluster play with the Arizona Wildcats, Ayton said he would be be happy to be booed again, this time because of his play on the court.

It’s all or nothing for the Phoenix Suns in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers, and big man DeAndre Ayton understands that very well. Ayton has been a bright spot for the Suns in this series. He has three consecutive double-doubles and showed the potential that made him Phoenix’s No. 1 pick in 2018. With the Suns in danger of another heartbreaking loss in the 3-1 series, Ayton knows it’s time for his team to make a move. Frankly, it will be a kind of dramatic desperation, Ayton told reporters. We know what to do. The Suns won the first game, but have since lost the series 2-1 and did not look good in the last game without a healthy Chris Paul. We know how we played in the last game, Ayton said. We had plenty of time to go to the lab, clean up and go over some things. For their part, the Lakers know the Suns won’t give in without a fight and expect to do better in the battle for the lead in the series. We have to have that mentality and know that this team will go out there with a lot of desperation, Lakers star Anthony Davis said. These guys can play a lot of minutes on their own. Guys are going to hit their pitches, but we have to keep doing what we do on both sides of the ball and we have to be decent, but it’s going to be a big game.

Suns not optimistic about Chris Paul

Paul did not train on Saturday and is considered doubtful for this match. We’ll see how it goes when he wakes up tomorrow, Suns coach Monty Williams said. He played at such a high level. He was one of the MVP contenders for most of the season, and then this? I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I would have let him influence me a bit, but he is a man of character. In the last two games, Paul was a shadow of his former self and didn’t participate in the crucial phases. He finished Game 3 with 27 minutes of play, seven points and six assists. He only fired eight shots during the fight. It is what it is: You control what you can control, Paul said. I know I’m doing everything I can every day to prepare for the race. If something happens, it happens. You have to overcome them and get through them.

The frightening thing for the Suns is that the Lakers are expected to get stronger as the series progresses, especially LeBron James, who is still recovering from an ankle injury that caused him to miss more than 20 games this season. For the first time in a long time, James seemed to enjoy the third game. He smiled as he blocked Suns forward Jay Crowder, impressing the Staples Center crowd and the Lakers’ bench. I’ve been working on my ankle and trying to get it back to the way it was before the injury, James told reporters after the game. But every day is a step forward, and we’re going to continue to work around the clock with my treatment to get him back, like I said, to the level he was at before the injury, and until then, my teammates will continue to hold me back as long as I try to play for them. Davis said James told him he could take it to the next level. He feels good. He told me he had a different gear, Davis said. We’re finding our rhythm. We’re in the right moment, but he set the tone and the guys followed him and started to attack and shoot.
