Head of State vs. Presbyterian Preview
Presbyterian opened its season with a 31-24 loss against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in overtime a week ago.
Blue Hose quarterback Tyler Huff completed 29 of 46 passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and as many interceptions, adding 19 yards and a score with his legs.
With just over a minute left to play, he got a lucky break when his “fourth-and-9” attempt was deflected by a defender and the ball bounced into the hands of running back Delvecchio Powell, who ran into the end zone to give Presbyterian a 24-21 lead.
But the Bulldogs evened the score with a field goal at the end of regulation time. After neither team achieved anything in the first extension, they found the end zone and Huff recovered to decide the game.
Kudos to Presbyterian University. Coach [Tommy] Spangler is doing very well and they fought very hard today, Bulldogs head coach Tre Lamb said, according to the Gardner-Webb Athletics website. A victory is a victory. We fought and came back to win. The sign of a good team is to win a game when you can play poorly. Look at the stats, ball movement was not a problem. We conceded critical situations and blocked field goals.
The Blue Hose went 2-10 overall and 1-5 in Big South play in 2019. The Chiefs were 5-7 this year, including 3-5 in their conference, in the Patriot Football League.
The Eagles opened the spring 2021 campaign with an even more crushing loss, when they went down by a 20-point margin. February: 52-0 loss against the James Madison Dukes. Morehead State had just 98 yards of offense and gave up 556 yards.
DeAndre Clayton completed 7 of 9 passes for 71 yards and a pick. He passed for just 1 yard on 10 attempts. The Eagles’ other quarterback, Mark Pappas, went 5 of 14 for 28 yards and an interception.
Clayton, a redshirt senior, joined Morehead State before the 2019 season after working at two Division II teams: The Golden Eagles and the Clarion Little Pioneers. He appeared in nine games in 2019, splitting time with Pappas and completing 27 of 45 passes for 277 yards, four touchdowns and five rebounds, while also running for 164 yards and four scores.
It was a different path, but I wouldn’t change it because it made me who I am today, Clayton said in February, according to the Morehead State athletics website. I’m the oldest of six children, I have three sisters and two brothers, so being a leader is something I’ve had to do from an early age.
