The Baltimore Ravens must make a major decision about Lamar Jackson in the coming weeks, whether or not they can extend the quarterback’s contract. Many feel the team should wait and see how Jackson performs, while others insist the quarterback should be paid. Knox recently compiled a list of all the players every team in the league should make for the rest of the offseason, and the Ravens, who signed Jackson to a contract extension, are at the top of that list. On the reasons, he wrote: In 2019, Jackson made the All-Pro first team and was the regular season MVP. However, he had a disappointing 2020 in which he threw for 10 fewer touchdowns than the season before and ran for 201 fewer yards. Jackson’s contract demands might be a little lower than if, say, he wins another MVP or leads Baltimore to the Super Bowl next season. With new players like Sammy Watkins, Rashod Bateman and Tylan Wallace, Jackson could have a very successful season. Waiting for Jackson’s contract extension will cost Baltim more in the long run: Quarterback salaries don’t suddenly go down. While the counter argument is that the Ravens don’t need to extend Jackson now, they can still save money by including Jackson’s contract in his extension. The Kansas City Chiefs made a similar move for Patrick Mahomes, whose budget will be just $7.4 million this season. The Ravens have likely taken note and could contract Jackson in the near future. Negotiations are underway, and the only mystery is how soon the parties can reach an agreement. If all goes well, you can expect it before the season starts.
Jackson wants to stay with the Ravens
Regardless of what others think the team should do with the contract in the coming weeks, Jackson himself doesn’t seem to be rolling his eyes. Will the quarterback want to stay with the team long-term or will he want to move on? As he said, it is still being worked on, but he wants to stay with the team for a very, very long time. It’s a high profile statement, and it shows how much Jackson wants to stay with the team and stay in the lineup for the future. The Ravens will probably reward him for his loyalty.
Jackson’s contract extension with the Ravens could come soon
While Palmer’s stance makes sense in some ways, that doesn’t mean the Ravens will follow it. The reality is that the team knows what Jackson is capable of, so there is no mystery with him as a quarterback. The team has also been in contract negotiations with Jackson for a few months now, showing that they are more than motivated to try and make things right. All of this suggests that the Ravens will move on and try to make a deal with Jackson sooner rather than later.
