Captain America has a few love interests in the Marvel Universe. The first was the love of his life, the Girl With Gauntlets, with whom he had a whirlwind romance (and engagement) in the ’40s. Since then, he’s been linked with superheroes like Sharon Carter, the Black Widow, and Sharon Carter’s daughter, the superheroine Captain Marvel.
Marvel fans have reacted in a rage to Captain America: The new Captain America comic book hits stands this week, and many Marvel fans aren’t happy about what they see as a “subtle” change to the character. It all goes back to the character’s supporting cast, namely the fictional character Black Panther and his buddy Captain America. “Captain America” Cap has been around in the Marvel universe since 1941, but for all intents and purposes, he is a proxy for the real-life superhero, Steve Rogers. Ahead of the series debut of What If…?, fans are speaking out against Marvel “replacing” Sam Wilson’s Captain America with Captain Carter. The official @CaptainAmerica Twitter account retired Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and switched to an updated look celebrating Anthony Mackie’s Captain America after the April season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which saw Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) take flight as the all-new Captain America. What If…? is a Marvel Studios animated series. poses and then answers the question, “What if Peggy Carter (voice of Hayley Atwell) accepted the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers to become Captain Carter?”
Captain Carter’s Twitter account has been taken over to promote the film What If…? Mackie’s Captain America still dominates the character’s official page on Facebook, but @CaptainAmerica on Twitter has temporarily changed its identity to “Captain Carter,” with a profile photo showing the figure dressed in Union Jack colors.
“Captain carter literally has the BRITISH flag on her suit why is she replacing sam wilson on the captain AMERICA twt account?” asks one tweet. Another user tweeted, “Sam wilson has been captain america for a minute and marvel is already replacing him with a white woman.”
Others speculated that the change was made to promote the first episode of What If…? , a series situated outside of the mainstream timeline yet canon in the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse and home to the Wilson Captain America. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has already hired Malcolm Spellman, the lead writer of Falcon and Winter Soldier, to create a Captain America 4 feature picture starring Mackie.

What If reimagines heroes like T’Challa of Wakanda as T’Challa Star-Lord (voiced by Chadwick Boseman), a mix of characters from the Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises, and alters famous tales from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe.
