Just one week into the new year, Floyd Mayweather was in the ring, defending his world title against Conor McGregor and ending a long-held retirement. Meanwhile, the pro boxing ring is still home to WBC World Super Bantamweight Champion Daniel Dubois, who was stopped by young sensation Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in the first round of their WBC World Title Eliminator bout in Las Vegas.

In one of the most talked about fights of the year, the 44-year-old retired legend took on a YouTuber. Americans Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul have won an eight-round fight whose winner was not announced according to the show’s rules. Since the announcement of the fight, there has been a lot of discussion about whether or not this fight is good for the sport. Traditionalists thought boxing would be devalued, while others rejoiced in the young fans it might attract. However, many predicted that Mayweather – one of the greatest boxers of all time, having won all 50 of his professional fights – would knock out the 26-year-old Paul. Although Mayweather almost didn’t get the gloves, Paul still got praise from the former UFC heavyweight champion….. British Youtuber KSI, who defeated Paul in a professional fight in 2019, infuriated boxing purists with this scathing tweet….. While Mexican superstar Saul Canelo Alvarez, who lost to Mayweather in 2013, only needed one emoji to sum up his thoughts….. One of the biggest complaints about this fight was the amount of money involved, as both fighters reportedly made several million dollars for the work they did that night. Money Mayweather himself called it a legalized bank robbery, causing current UFC heavyweight champion Francis Nganna to wonder what his sport is doing wrong….. …while other boxers were wondering if they could make some easy money… 
Mayweather said he would remain retired and probably not participate in practice fights. But you get the feeling this isn’t the last time you’ll see Logan Paul in the ring.

On Saturday night, Daniel Dynamite Dubois excelled again by knocking out Romanian Bogdan Dina in the second round of a heavyweight fight. His performance impressed the former world champion….. The 23-year-old boxer fought for the first time since suffering a broken eye socket in a fight against Briton Joe Joyce in November. Last month, Dubois appeared on the podcast That Peter Crouch and promised to come back stronger – a phrase coined by the popular show. Former England player Peter Crouch and presenter Chris Stark were delighted to play their part in London’s victory…..
Can Jake Paul beat Tommy Fury?
We also saw the return of former Love Island star Tommy Fury on Saturday. The 22-year-old Cruzervate has won four of his five previous professional fights by knockout, leaving many boxing fans wondering about his opponent’s skill level. But this time he didn’t have the last word against Scot Jordan Grant. Tommy, the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, took a number of punches and had to work hard for a four round points victory. He received criticism from fans after the win, but after only 10 amateur fights before turning professional, Fury admitted he still has a lot to learn. I’m not Sugar Ray Leonard and I don’t claim that title – I’m Tommy Fury and I try to do my best, he said. This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. What’s next for Fury? Over the past few months, he’s been in a gunfight with Youtuber Jake Paul – Logan’s brother – and some fans now believe the American can beat him.

The lightweight division is probably the most popular weight class in world boxing. And they are led by four undefeated young American superstars: Gervonta Davis, 26, Teofimo Lopez, 23, Ryan Garcia, 22, and Devin Haney, 22. Unified world champion Lopez is at the top of his game, WBC titleholder Hani is full of potential, the popular Garcia has shown on Instagram that he is more than just a fighter, and the relentless puncher Davis has knocked out 23 of his 24 opponents. What’s even more satisfying for boxing fans is that there’s a lot of angst between these four fights. And in the final episode, a bit of bickering on Twitter between Garcia and Haney, with a surprise appearance by Luke Campbell from Britain. Garcia, who took a break to focus on his mental health, announced that he was ready to return to the ring….. He lashed out at Haynie and criticized his rival’s performance in his victory over Venezuelan Jorge Linares last month. Garcia’s last win came in the seventh round against Olympic gold medalist Campbell in January. But he was hit by the Hull fighter in the second round, which Haney was happy to point out….. The gifted Campbell has won the world title twice, losing to Linares in 2017 and Lomachenko in 2019. The 33-year-old fighter is somewhat unhappy to be fighting in the current lightweight era, although he was not happy to see his name mentioned by Haynie…. It remains to be seen if Campbell will continue to box after his fourth career loss against Garcia. As for the four Americans, their rivalry will only intensify and it’s only a matter of time before we see a fight between the best and brightest in the 135-pound division. Lomachenko, who lost to Lopez in October, should not be ruled out either. The three-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist is on the hot seat for his clash with Japanese Masayoshi Nakatani on the 26th. June at her best….
De La Hoya and Canelo on social media
The animosity between Saul Canelo Alvarez and his former promoter Oscar de la Hoya has not gone away. Alvarez, who defeated Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders in a super middleweight unification fight last month, officially parted ways with De La Hoya’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, in November. The separation was very painful, and last week De la Hoya gave his veteran a little lesson. In a video where Canelo can be seen teaching a young boxer the fundamentals of the sport, the American boxer turned promoter responded with this… 
In response, Alvarez called De La Hoya a traitor and also used obscene language. De la Hoya said in March that he planned to return to boxing, 13 years after retiring from the sport. The 48-year-old boxer won 11 titles in six weight classes during his 16-year career before retiring in 2008. Strange things happen in boxing, but we’re certainly not going to see King of the Book Alvarez face his former boss in a rematch, are we?
