The cruise line announced on Thursday that it has vaccinated 5,730 crew members against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). The initiative includes both U.S. crew members and those from foreign countries. The company said in a release that it has been vaccinating crew members since 2008, but the rota was only recently expanded to include more countries.
Last month, Royal Caribbean Cruises announced that it has vaccinated all of its 5,730 crew members against the measles to help fight back against the recent outbreak of measles in the US, which has claimed more than 50 lives. The cruise giant said it took action after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an alert saying that the outbreak was spreading from the US to other countries in the Pacific.
In the wake of the 2009 H1N1 virus outbreak that killed some 7,500 people, the cruise industry in the US has adopted a vaccination program for its passengers to prevent the spread of the disease. Similar programs have been introduced by cruise lines in other parts of the world, with Royal Caribbean being one of the first to do so. The global cruise industry has been highly affected by the H1N1 flu outbreak, as the number of passengers who do not comply with the vaccination program is estimated to be around 90 percent. Given the high prevalence of the disease, unless the new vaccination program is implemented on a regular basis, the number of fatalities in the global cruise industry might increase.
As Royal Caribbean continues to vaccinate crew members in its fleet, the cruise line’s chief executive officer said more than half of the crew on board have been partially or fully vaccinated. This is an important measure to protect guests and crew as more and more cruise ships resume operations during the year.

Cruise lines are preparing to resume operations not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world, and an important part of that effort is ensuring that all crew members are fully vaccinated. Royal Caribbean recently vaccinated crew members in several U.S. ports, including the cruise capital of the world, Port Miami, Florida. On the same day, 182 crew members aboard the Explorer of the Seas in Port-Miami received a second vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine.
