There are many reasons to buy out a team, whether it’s to acquire a superstar or to put a team’s finances in order. But, what about teams that are already good?
As we approach the NBA offseason, there are a few players who will be looking to move on from their current clubs. With the Los Angeles Lakers’ star point guard, Kobe Bryant, and Chicago Bulls centre, Joakim Noah, both expected to retire, the league is bracing itself for the departures of some of the biggest names in the game.. When you look across the league, you’ll see that some of the best players are on some of the worst clubs. Those players are free to take advantage of their contract’s monetary worth, but if they wanted out and were willing to forego some money in exchange for a chance to compete, some contenders would be delighted to welcome them with open arms.
Some free agents picked their club, and their organization is paying the price for a poor deal. Others were moved before the deadline or through sign-and-trade. Some teams are lacking in zeal. Last season, Blake Griffin did just that for the Nets. Who do you think could accomplish it in 2021-2022? These five players are viable buyout possibilities, and these are the best matches for them.
Ricky Rubio is a player with the Phoenix Suns.
Stats for 2020-2021: 8.6 points per game, 3.3 points per game, 6.4 points per game, 6.4 points per game, 1.4 points per game, 0.1 points per game
Ricky Rubio needs to believe that his worth has increased as a result of his outstanding performance in the Olympics. Teams must be keeping an eye on Rubio to see if he can reach an agreement on a buyout with the remaining $17 million on his contract. The Timberwolves will be terrible next season, and Rubio’s contract is too high for a backup point guard, therefore a buyout is the best choice if Rubio wants to compete for a championship.
Rubio signed a three-year, $54 million contract with the Suns in 2019. In his debut season under Monty Williams, he set a career best for points (13.1) and assists (8.8) per game. Cameron Payne is a far superior shooting guard than Landry Shamet, allowing him to go from one-guard to two-guard to create space for Rubio. Rubio is a seasoned veteran with NBA Finals ambitions who might contribute straight away with a familiar club.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Thaddeus Young
Stats for 2020-2021: 12.1 points per game, 6.2 points per game, 4.3 points per game, 1.1 points per game, 0.6 points per game
Thad Young was the point-forward for the Chicago Bulls at one point. He shot a career-high 55.9% from the floor last season, and his assists were also a career high. Young is one of the best pass-first post players in the league. He doesn’t provide much value to a Spurs club that is attempting to play younger players at 33 years old.
However, he is priceless to a Bucks team attempting to defend their championship. Despite the acquisition of Grayson Allen, Pat Connaughton is the backup shooting guard and small forward. Young, on the other hand, is a much more complete player at small forward and can even play some power forward if necessary.
Dallas Mavericks’ Goran Dragic
Stats for 2020-2021: 13.4 points per game, 3.4 points per game, 4.4 points per game, 0.7 points per game, 0.2 points per game
Nobody expected Dragic to stay with the Toronto Raptors long term after being traded to them in a sign-and-trade with Kyle Lowry. The best option for the 35-year-old is to secure a buyout deal and join a competitor. Given his ties to Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks would be his best match.
Dragic, like Doncic, is a Slovenian. Trey Burke is Doncic’s backup for the time being. No disrespect to Burke, but Dragic can not only offer superior basketball performance, but also provide an aspect to the squad that the rest of the team lacks because of his ethnicity. This seems to be a simple choice if Dragic is bought out.

Stats for 2020-2021: 12.2 points per game, 7.4 points per game, 2.5 points per game, 0.6 points per game, 0.1 points per game
The Lakers’ trend is to bring in more experienced players, so why not bring in Love, a 32-year-old former All-Star who won a championship with LeBron James in 2016. Since their tenure in Cleveland, LeBron and Love have been in four consecutive NBA Finals. Due to injuries, Love’s statistics have dwindled recently. In the past three years, Love has appeared in a total of 103 games.
Last year, the Cavaliers were unable to locate a trade partner for Andre Drummond, and we saw how that turned out. This year, Love owes $31 million, and the next year, he owes $28 million. Love may be able to negotiate a buyout in order to compete for another title. If he were to be bought out, joining the Lakers would be the most logical choice given his ties to the franchise.
Los Angeles Clippers’ John Wall
Stats for 2020-2021: 20.6 points per game, 3.2 points per game, 6.9 points per game, 1.1 points per game, 0.8 points per game
Wall is projected to earn more than $44 million this season and has a $47 million player option for next season. That raises an interesting issue. What is the value of a championship to you? Due to Kawhi Leonard’s expected absence this season, the Clippers are now lacking in star power. Last season, Wall only played 40 games before being shut down, but he put up solid statistics while he was on the floor.
Wall’s issue is that he is unable to remain on the court. In the past four years, Wall has appeared in 113 games. He seems to be in the best condition he’s had in years, but he’s not worth more than $40 million. With Reggie Jackson set to start, the Clippers still have a vacancy at point guard. Jackson would be a better fit on the bench, while Wall and Paul George would make for an intriguing duo.
